Pre-camp 1 - Before J-1 Visa Interview

Hello!

At the time of writing, I'm a few months into the process of getting off to camp... I've been accepted by Camp Lee Mar in Pensylvannia (about 90 miles north-west of NY), I've got my visa interview in 5 days time.

I made my application in Sep 2010, I knew that once I started my final university year I wouldn't have the time and I had a few empty weeks between a holiday to Rome and the beginning of term. Camp Leaders put themselves ahead of the competition in my research (very helpful website, clear breakdown of costs etc.) and it wasn't until after I applied that I really began to appreciate the team; the support from the 'Turtles', the group that I was assigned, was fantastic, period.

The first stage of the application was filling in the Camp Leaders form... Needless to say it was worth the time it took to properly sell myself, were it not for the concerned badgering of CL staff I'd never have got accepted. My skills weren't anything special - a bit of sports, chess, some piano - and I'd only done a bit of teaching (basketball, and the kids were better than me to begin with), but putting them down made a difference to the whole. The only things I really thought I'd be able to handle was trash percussion (I ran a college club) and astronomy (I did a GCSE)... if all goes well I'll be taking my camp kids stargazing, watch this space for pictures.

Besides my peculiar problems, everything about that part of the application went without a hitch; I'm finishing this year quite late into June so I was worried I was loosing out on most of the camps. As it happens everything worked out fine.

I handled the ACRO Form in early Sep, and the Medical form was handled by my GP.

I signed up to the facebook group first thing.
